Toyota Corolla Spare Key in Keller TX (2020-2026 Models)
The current-generation Corolla is the car a lot of Keller families hand to a new driver, and it is very often sold used with a single key. That one key now has to survive a backpack, a gym locker and a teenager. Call or text (817) 968-3866 with the year and whether the car has a start button, and we will quote the spare before we come out.
Quick Answer
A spare key for a 2020 to 2026 Toyota Corolla in Keller TX costs $140 to $300 if the car has a keyed ignition and $200 to $450 if it has push-button start, cut and programmed with your working key present. It takes under an hour in your driveway. If the only key is lost first, the same car costs $250 to $500 or more to recover.
Pricing below is as of October 2026 for Keller, Watauga, Southlake, Colleyville, Haslet and North Richland Hills.
One Generation, Two Key Systems
The Corolla that arrived for the 2020 model year is still the Corolla on sale today, with a refresh along the way. Across those years Toyota built it with two completely different ways of starting the engine, and which one you have decides everything about the spare.
Keyed ignition. You put a bladed key into the steering column and turn it. The key has lock and unlock buttons built into its head and a transponder chip inside. This was the setup on the lower trims in the earlier years of this generation.
Smart key with push-button start. There is no key slot. The fob stays in your pocket, the doors unlock when you touch the handle, and the engine starts with a button. This was standard on the upper trims from the beginning, on the hybrid versions, and on the GR Corolla, and it spread to more trims after the mid-generation refresh.
Do not try to work it out from the trim badge. Trim content changed from year to year, and used cars get described loosely. Look at the dash instead:
- A key slot on the right of the steering column means a keyed car and a remote head key.
- A round start button means a smart key.
That one look answers the question, and it is the first thing we ask on the phone.
The Corolla Family in This Generation
"Corolla" covers several different cars in these years, and the key follows the car.
Corolla sedan. The volume model. Both key systems exist here depending on year and trim.
Corolla Hybrid. Sold alongside the sedan and equipped with the smart key system. A hybrid has no conventional starter sound, so the button and the READY light are the whole experience. If your hybrid is silent after you press the button, that is normal; check for READY on the dash before assuming the key failed.
Corolla Hatchback. A different body with its own trim structure. Many are smart-key cars. Some lower-trim hatchbacks in the early years were keyed.
GR Corolla. The all-wheel-drive performance model added later in the generation. Smart key and push-button start. These are enthusiast cars and their owners tend to want a factory-style fob, which we can supply.
Corolla Cross. Despite the name it is a separate small SUV with its own key details. We cover it in Toyota Venza and Corolla Cross spare key.
Older Corollas, before this generation, use earlier chips and are a different conversation. If yours is a 2019 or earlier sedan, the general pricing is in our Toyota key replacement cost guide.

Two rows deserve a comment.
The plain chip key without buttons is an option on keyed cars that few people know about. It starts the car and opens the door with the blade. It will not lock or unlock remotely. As a hidden backup, in a drawer or with a relative, it does the one job a spare needs to do for less money.
The same-visit row is the bargain on the table. Once our equipment is connected and the car is in programming mode, adding another key is mostly the cost of the key itself plus $40 to $90. If two drivers share the car and you also want a drawer spare, do all of it in one visit.
How the Spare Is Made
On a keyed Corolla
The new blade is cut first. If your existing key is in good shape we copy it. If it is worn, we cut to the factory code so the new key is better than the one it replaces. A hardware-store copy of the blade alone will open the door but will not start the car, because the chip is what the engine is waiting for.
Then the transponder is registered to the car through the diagnostic port under the dash, and the remote buttons are paired. With a working key present this is quick. We test the new key in the ignition and in the driver door, then test lock, unlock, trunk and panic from the buttons.
On a smart-key Corolla
The fob is registered to the car's smart key system through the same port. Your existing fob is used to authorize the session. The hidden emergency blade inside the new fob is then cut to match your door lock.
That last step gets skipped by some online-key sellers and by some shops, and it should not be. The emergency blade is the only way into the car when the fob battery or the car's 12-volt battery is dead. A spare fob with an uncut blade is half a spare. We explain how the blade and the backup start procedure work in dead key fob: how to start your car.
After programming, we check that both fobs lock, unlock and start the car, and that each is detected from both front doors.
How long it takes
For a spare with a working key present, plan on 30 to 45 minutes from when we arrive. A fuller explanation of what affects the clock is in how long does car key programming take.
Newer Corollas and Tighter Security
Toyota has tightened its key security through this generation. On the newest cars, the system is more particular about how a programming session is authorized, and recovering a car with no keys at all involves more steps than it did on a 2020.
For a spare, this changes little. You have a working key, the working key authorizes the session, and the job proceeds normally.
For a lost-everything situation, it changes the cost and the time. That is the practical argument for doing this now. The gap between "add a spare" and "all keys lost" is wider on a 2025 than on a 2020, and it is wide on both. If you want to see what the recovery looks like, read Toyota RAV4 smart key and all keys lost; the RAV4 of these years shares much of its key system with the Corolla.
Things That Go Wrong With Corolla Keys
The smart fob battery. It is a coin cell and it typically lasts a couple of years. The car warns you on the dash when it is getting low. Replace it then, not when the fob stops working at a gas pump. It is $20 to $45 with a function test, or a few dollars if you do it yourself.
The remote head key cracking at the blade. On keyed cars the plastic head carries the buttons, the chip and the blade in one piece. Years of twisting loosen the blade in the head. If yours wobbles, replace it before it separates in the ignition.
A fob that went through the wash. Sometimes it survives. Treat a revived fob as the spare, not the main key. We go through repair versus replacement in key fob repair versus replacement cost.
A dash warning about the key system. If the car reports a smart key fault with a fob that has a fresh battery, that is a vehicle-side issue and a different job. See smart key system malfunction warning.
An online fob that will not program. Corolla fobs look alike across years and are not interchangeable. The part number has to match the year and the system, and used fobs that were registered to another Toyota generally cannot be reused. Send us the listing before you buy.
Why a Corolla Is the Car to Do This On
Three things make the Corolla the textbook case for a spare.
It is a first car. In Keller that means student parking lots, practice fields and part-time jobs, and keys that get set down in a lot of places.
It is bought used. Rental fleets and lease returns feed a steady supply of two- and three-year-old Corollas into the market, and they very commonly arrive with one key. The second key was never returned with the car.
And it is inexpensive to fix today. A spare with a working key is among the cheapest smart-key jobs we do. The same car with no keys is a recovery, at night, with a new driver stranded somewhere. The reasoning is laid out in more detail in why to cut a second key before you lose the first.
If you bought the car used with one key, there is a security angle too. A fob that was not handed over still exists somewhere. When we add your spare we can also remove any keys you do not have from the car's memory, so only the fobs in your hand will start it.
Dealer or Mobile Locksmith for a Corolla Spare?
A Toyota dealer can supply and program a Corolla key. You will book a service appointment, bring the car in, and wait. For a spare, where the car drives fine, that is an inconvenience and not a crisis.
A mobile locksmith does the same job in your driveway or at your office, with the same result: a key registered to the car that behaves exactly like the original. For most owners the decision is about time. The broader comparison, including where the dealer is the right call, is in auto locksmith versus dealership for car key replacement.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is a spare key for a 2020 to 2026 Toyota Corolla in Keller TX?
With a working key present, a remote head key for a keyed Corolla is $140 to $300 and a smart key for a push-button Corolla is $200 to $450, cut and programmed. A second key at the same visit adds $40 to $90 in programming. The mobile service call is $45 to $95.
How do I know if my Corolla has a smart key?
Look at the dash. A round start button means a smart key system. A key slot on the steering column means a keyed ignition with a remote head key. Trim names are not reliable because equipment changed from year to year.
Does the Corolla Hybrid use a different key?
The Corolla Hybrid in this generation uses the smart key system with push-button start. The fob must be the correct part for the year, and it is registered to the car the same way as on a non-hybrid smart-key Corolla.
Can I program a Corolla spare key myself?
Not on this generation. There is no owner-performed procedure. The key has to be registered through the diagnostic port with programming equipment, and on smart-key cars the emergency blade also has to be cut.
How long does it take to make a Corolla spare key?
About 30 to 45 minutes at your location when you have a working key. All-keys-lost recovery takes longer, especially on the newest model years.
What happens if I lose my only Corolla key?
The car can still be recovered where it sits, but it costs more: $250 to $500 or more on a smart-key Corolla, and it takes longer on newer years. That gap is the reason to add a spare while one key still works.
Will a Corolla key I bought online work?
Only if the part number matches your year and key system, and only if it has never been registered to another vehicle. Corolla fobs from different years look nearly identical and are not interchangeable.
