- Your gear selector moves a lever or sends an electronic signal.
- A shift cable or shift-by-wire actuator translates that into a physical position at the transmission (on cable-shift vehicles).
- A transmission range sensor — also called a neutral safety switch, PRNDL switch, or inhibitor switch depending on the manufacturer — reads the actual position at the transmission.
- A control module — the transmission control module, powertrain control module, or body control module depending on the platform — receives that reading.
- The module authorizes the starter only if the reading says PARK or NEUTRAL.
Every one of those links can fail independently. What makes your symptom useful is that starting in NEUTRAL proves the starter, the battery, the key, the immobilizer and the ignition switch are all working. If any of those were the problem, it would not start in any gear.
That last point is worth sitting with, because it saves money. If a shop suggests a starter or a battery for a car that starts fine in neutral, they have not read the symptom.
The Realistic Causes
Ordered roughly by how often we see them, cheapest first.
1. A misadjusted or stretched shift cable
The most common cause on cable-shift vehicles and often the cheapest.
The cable between your gear selector and the transmission stretches slightly over years. Eventually, when the lever in the cabin sits in PARK, the actual lever at the transmission is sitting slightly short of PARK — far enough that the range sensor does not register it, close enough that the pawl still engages so the car does not roll.
The tells are specific and easy to check yourself. Does the shifter feel vague, or does it have more play than it used to? Does jiggling the shifter while in PARK sometimes let it start? Does the car occasionally start in PARK if you push the lever firmly forward first? All three point at cable adjustment.
The rollaway check is important too: if the car starts in NEUTRAL and you also notice it can be rocked slightly when parked without the brake, treat that as urgent. A transmission that is not fully reaching PARK is not reliably holding the vehicle.
2. A worn or contaminated transmission range sensor
The next most common, and the classic version of this fault.
The range sensor is a multi-position switch mounted at the transmission that reports which gear position the lever is actually in. It has contacts inside it, and contacts wear, corrode and get contaminated with fluid over a decade.
The PARK contact usually fails first. That is not a coincidence — it is the position the vehicle sits in for the overwhelming majority of its life, so it takes the most electrical cycling and the most sustained contact wear.
Diagnostic tells beyond the no-start: the reverse lights stop working or work intermittently, the gear indicator on the dash shows the wrong gear or flickers between gears, the shift indicator lights up multiple positions at once, or the transmission shifts oddly because the module is working from a bad position signal.
3. A failing neutral safety switch or its wiring
On older vehicles this is a discrete switch rather than an integrated range sensor, and it fails the same way for the same reason.
Wiring is worth calling out separately. The harness to a transmission-mounted switch lives in a hot, vibrating, fluid-exposed environment underneath the vehicle. Chafed insulation, a corroded connector or a broken pin produce exactly this symptom and are cheaper to fix than the sensor if that is genuinely the fault.
4. A control module problem
Least common, most expensive, and the one to conclude last rather than first.
Three versions of this exist and they are meaningfully different:
A module that is misreading a good signal. Rare on its own, and usually accompanied by other symptoms.
A module that was replaced and never properly programmed. This one is not rare at all, and it is the single most common module-related version of this complaint we see. A transmission control module or powertrain control module installed as a replacement — new, used or rebuilt — has to be coded to the vehicle and taken through an adaptive relearn before it behaves correctly. Skipped or partial programming produces a module that mostly works while failing in specific functions, and gear-position handling is a frequent place that surfaces. A module that lost its configuration after an electrical event. A deeply discharged battery, a reversed jump start or a prior repair can corrupt stored configuration. On some platforms this presents as a set of unrelated-looking faults appearing at once. A vehicle that recently had any module replaced changes the diagnostic priority completely. Say so when you call. It moves module programming from the bottom of the list to the top.
Three Checks Worth Doing Before You Call
All free, all narrow the diagnosis.
1. Try it in PARK with pressure on the shifter. Hold the brake, push the selector firmly forward into PARK, and try again. If it starts, you have a strong indicator of cable adjustment or a marginal range sensor rather than a module fault.
2. Check the reverse lights. Have somebody stand behind the car while you select reverse with the engine off and the key on. Reverse lights on most vehicles are switched through the same range sensor. If they are dead or intermittent, the sensor moves to the top of the suspect list.
3. Watch the gear indicator on the dash. Does it show the right gear? Does it flicker, lag, or light up more than one position? A dash indicator that disagrees with the lever is a range-signal problem, full stop.

What Not to Do
Do not just keep starting it in neutral and get on with life. We understand the temptation — the car runs, you have places to be. But the same signal that authorizes the starter also drives the reverse lights, the park-lock interlock that keeps the key or shifter from releasing, and on many vehicles the rollaway protection. Driving for months on the neutral workaround means driving without those, and the failure mode at the end of that road is a car that rolls out of a driveway.
Do not replace the starter. A car that starts in neutral has a working starter. This gets sold more often than it should.
Do not bypass the safety switch. There are internet suggestions about jumping the neutral safety circuit to make the car start in any gear. That defeats the interlock that prevents the vehicle starting in DRIVE or REVERSE. It is genuinely dangerous and it is not a repair.
