1. The key fob itself

This is first because it is common and free to rule out. A fob with a worn or swollen panic button, or one that has taken water, can transmit intermittently from a pocket or a kitchen counter. If the alarm tends to fire when the fob is inside the house near an exterior wall, this is your prime suspect.

Test it by taking every fob for that vehicle and putting them in a metal container or far from the car overnight. If the alarm stays quiet, you have your answer, and the fix is a fob replacement or in some cases just a button repair. 2. The vehicle battery and charging system

The second most common cause, and the one people never guess. Alarm systems monitor voltage. A battery that is failing internally can produce sudden voltage drops overnight, and a number of factory alarm designs interpret an abrupt drop as someone cutting power to defeat the system, which is exactly the scenario the alarm exists to catch.

The tell is a pattern. Alarm firing mostly overnight or in cold snaps, combined with slow cranking, dim interior lights on first door open, or a battery more than four years old, points here strongly. This is also why a car that sat for a week at DFW airport parking sometimes greets its owner mid-alarm.

3. Door, hood and trunk latch sensors

Each closure on the vehicle has a switch telling the body control module whether it is open. When one of those switches corrodes or wears, it starts flickering between states, and a closed door that momentarily reports "open" is a textbook alarm trigger.

The hood latch switch is the most frequent offender because it lives in the dirtiest, wettest place on the car. Trunk and liftgate latches are a close second on older vehicles.

You can often find this yourself. Sit in the car with the doors closed and watch the dash. Most vehicles display a door-ajar indicator, and many will show which opening. Push firmly on each door, the hood and the trunk in turn and watch whether the indicator flickers. On some vehicles the interior dome light gives it away instead.

4. Shock, tilt and glass-break sensors

Vehicles with factory alarm packages often include a shock sensor, and some include tilt sensors intended to catch a tow-away, plus interior motion sensors on higher trims. These are calibrated at the factory, but sensitivity drifts, and a sensor that has become oversensitive will trigger on a passing truck, a heavy storm, or in the case of interior motion sensors, on a balloon, an air freshener swinging, or a pet left in the car.

5. The body control module

The body control module, or BCM, is the computer that actually decides whether to sound the alarm based on everything the sensors report. This is last on the list because it is the least common and the most expensive, and because diagnosing it properly requires ruling out the four cheaper causes above first. Any shop that reaches for module replacement before checking your fob and your battery is not diagnosing, it is guessing with your money.
